Getting Mum organised

I have been busy preparing things for Mum to do while she is staying at my sister's place. 

I find that I have to get Mum to do things to keep her mind active (dementia), so I always cut things out and place things in front of her and mention what she has to do.  I do everything except the sewing...she is still a perfectionist when it comes to sewing.

 Mum LOVES doing applique on her machine, so I am bagging each item separately with its matching top & bobbin threads... labeling EVERYTHING.

 I die cut these cute cars.. you waste a lot of fabric and vilisoflex, valisoflex, ... sticky stuff on the back of the fabric, but I think it is worth it...they are so cute, and will look even better after they have been stitched with blanket stitch.

 

The I found this Chook Shed pattern and started cutting one out...and thought..what the heck!...I'll cut 2 out and Mum can blanket stitch both of these. 

Mum use to knit the cotton dish cloths, but now she has forgotten how to knit.... so I must keep the sewing up, plus she reads a weekly Scottish magazine (People's Friend), and sleeps watches TV.

Tomorrow I must get some hand stitching prepared for me.

One Shelf down..MANY more to go....

To keep Mum's mind active, I have to keep giving her little jobs to do...

Today I pulled all my creams & whites out of that one shelf, as they were crammed  placed in over time and somehow was an eyesore,  absolute mess a tad messy.

 They all came from that one shelf

ah well, they are now on another shelf in my new built in on the other side of the room.

One shelf done...MANY more to go.

Care Bare Quilt

Another "Mum and me" quilt completed.

Looking through my stash, I found two 6" x 35" strips of Care Bear fabric that I had purchased along with other strips years ago on eBay..put away & forgotten, until a couple of weeks ago.

Mum enjoys applique using her machine, so I dug further into my stash and found tone on tone of the 4 colours of the Care Bears.  I designed a heart and got Mum to prepare the hearts for me to iron on, then she appliqued them onto a lighter shade than the heart.  

I dug yet deeper into my stash and was VERY surprised to find a few yards of Care Bear fabric.  I must have bought it while in the States quite a few years ago.

 

 It all fell into place and I even had enough of the Care Bear fabric (just) for the backing.

 I found a loopy star stitch to quilt it and then I used the plain blue for the binding.

It finished up being 50" x 60".

I didn't follow a pattern, just winged it AND it was all fabric & wadding from my stash.

 

Now Mum wants me to find another project for her to start on.

Catching up on my BOM

This week, I have been trying to catch up on my Block of the Month and so far I have made:

Block 5 - Pig in Mud

 Then Block 6 - Sheep

 Then Block 7 - Barn

I still have Block 8 to make (a Beehive), before the next one comes early May.

Do you know what a LILLY PILLY is?

Last month, while at Bingo (yes, I play Bingo...and LOVE it).. the 2 sisters who sit on the table in front of me (same vintage as my Mum), were talking about when they were young, their Mum use to make Lilly Pilly Jam.  They tried to explain what a Lilly Pilly was, but I ended up coming home & "googled" it.

They are no bigger than a cherry in size, and when sliced open (VERY easily) they have a singular hard black seed in the middle.  They have the crispness of an apple and starchy but sort of sweet.

I came home & told my hubby and...guess what?... we have 3 trees on our property.

So, hubby picked a heap of them, and my Mum, granddaughter & I got in and made jam.

    I bottled them into my smallest jars.....

and took 2 jars to Bingo last Monday and gave the two sisters a bottle each.

Lesson learnt here.. I must take more notice of what is growing in my own back yard!  LOL!

Fat Quarter gift

The last of my Birthday fat quarters arrived while I was away doing "Nanna duties".

This one came from Tarnyia: 

Even thou it was a "fat quarter" swap, Tarnyia was very generous & sent double that, plus a notepad & lollies...THANK YOU!!!!

I came home yesterday with the 2 grand kids and while I was driving home (8 hours driving), my granddaughter asked if they could go horse riding, like they did 2 years ago when they came to spend Easter school holidays with me.

So a phone call last night and here they are horse riding while I sat back & read a book.

Now they are home, they want to go quad bike riding.... well they are passengers behind my hubby & me, as they are way to young to ride on their own.

Tomorrow they are going to see a Billy-Cart Derby, followed by learning card making.
